What I Ate Wednesday – Anniversary Edition

I’m so excited to share my What I Ate Wednesday, this week!

As some of you might have read, yesterday was my anniversary! Seamus and I are on vacation, so we took the day and just spent it together. We cuddled, talked and just flat out relaxed, it was one of those days that you dream about later on when things get stressful. We also went out for a delicious lunch to one of our favorite restaurants, Sea Bar. The first time we ever went to Sea Bar was for our first anniversary, last year. Sea Bar isn’t baby friendly, so we don’t get there a lot, but the second an opportunity presents itself, we go. Since we had decided to take Emmett to day care for the day, we ventured out on an adult date to Sea Bar, in downtown Buffalo.

We’ve probably only been to Sea Bar 4 or 5 times, but every time we go the food is out of this world! I’m a creature of habit, so I order the exact same thing every single time, and it never gets old. My thought is, if you find something you like and that tastes good, why switch it up? Stick with what you know! 🙂

While we waited for our table to be ready I realized two things; one was that I was no longer nursing and could order an alcoholic drink with lunch and two, this would be my first drink with alcohol, in almost two years. Yikes!! I was super excited about ordering a Bloody Mary, my absolute favorite drink and Sea Bar did not disappoint. It was unbelievable, spicy and tangy with just enough vodka to give it a kick. I was worried that Seamus would need to drive us home (since it had been 2 years without any liquor), but I ended up being just fine.

what-i-ate-wednesday-1023-7I apologize for the low quality pictures, but the wall to my right has light displays that switch colors so it’s hard to capture something well. You’ll notice it more in the next couple of photos where things look very blue.

I love the table settings at Sea Bar, simple but elegant and slightly modern.

I started with a bowl of Sesame Noodles and we split a spider roll. Just looking at these pictures makes me drool all over again!

what-i-ate-wednesday-1023-1 what-I-ate-wednesday-1023Alright, let me tell you about my  main course. It’s call The Cuban, and it is to die for! It’s freshly cooked and shredded pork, ham, thinly sliced dill pickles, and some hearty spicy mustard smothered with cheese and then placed between pieces of crusty bread. I think they throw it on the panini press for a bit too, but, OH MY GOD! This thing is amazing! Oh, and the french fries are pretty damn good too. The coleslaw looking salad on the plate, is actually Kim Chi. It is VERY hot, so I always avoid it but I’m sure that would be good too, if I ate that sort of thing.

what-i-ate-wednesday-1023-6 what-i-ate-wednesday-1023-10I didn’t get any photos of it, but Seamus got delicious Pork Enchiladas. His reaction to the food is similar to mine. I’m telling you, if you live in Buffalo, GO TO SEA BAR! Their menu isn’t extensive but every single thing on there is mouthwatering. We’ve never gone for dinner, or had anything off of their dinner menu, but I’m sure it is equally incredible.

The rest of the day was spent relaxing at home and then eventually going out to get Emmett. Before we headed home we went to the mall to grab a few things we needed and to get some Cheesecake for dessert. Last year for our dessert we had our wedding cake from the year before, since we didn’t have it this year, we opted for a close second…Cheesecake! Yummy!

Once home, Seamus headed out to the gym and I stayed home with our little bugga-boo. Emmett and I read and then FaceTimed with my mom and dad for a little bit. Oh! And Emmett wanted everyone to see his What I Ate Wednesday.

what-i-ate-wednesday-1023-5He loves apples and does a pretty fantastic job of eating most of it, once he gets going.

Okay, folks! That’s it for this week’s What I Ate Wednesday. Be sure to stop in at Peas and Crayons and check out Jenn’s blog and link-up.

Wonderful Weekend – Fun as a Toddler

That title says it all, it was an absolutely wonderful weekend!

We didn’t have any major plans this wonderful weekend, but I did knew that I wanted to get Emmett out of the house as much as possible. The warm weekend summers are slowly but surely coming to an end and I want to do as much as possible before the first flakes flies.

Emmett woke up very early on Saturday morning (5 am) and I decided to take full advantage of that. We ate a quick breakfast and then decided to hitch up the bike trailer that my in-laws (THANK YOU!) got Emmett for his birthday. It was so awesome! The trailer is the inStep brand and is just perfect, it has room for 2 kids and little pockets on the side that Emmett can put little toys or snacks in. We put on his little helmet, got him all buckled in and away we went. I think we were riding for about 15 minutes, before I turned around and saw that he was fast asleep. So when people ask me whether I think Emmett had a good time or not, I say, heck yes he had a good time, he was comfortable enough to fall asleep. We ended up riding for 6.5 miles and then heading back home because I wanted to get to the farmer’s market before it got too busy.

We stopped home, used the bathroom and then pulled the jogging stroller out to head to the market. I was concerned that Emmett wouldn’t be very pleased with going from one enclosed buckled in seat to another, but he was just fine, in fact, he seemed really happy. Once we’re at the market, he’s always happy because he has so much to look at. He’s totally like his momma, a people watcher!

The colors of fruit and vegetables at the market were just beautiful. Check out this spread I picked up, tomatoes (so many tomatoes), cucumbers, red onion, zucchini, red potatoes and some Chevre from First Light Farm and Creamery. I barely bought any produce at the actual super market, just some lettuce because they didn’t have much at Bidwell.  That makes me happy because I love supporting local and things that are fresh, never shipped, ALWAYS taste better.

weekend-6

After all that early morning activity, Emmett was really sleepy and I needed a shower so we headed home for both. While he slept I worked on my blog post, 5 tips for New Moms and got that nearly completed so we could have some family fun after Emmett woke up.

We headed out for some ice cream at Anderson’s and then some playground time. We always get Emmett a baby sized dish of vanilla frozen custard and he eats about a quarter of it and then daddy finishes the rest. 🙂 It really hit the spot. We headed over to a nearby playground next and we swung and swung. He loves it! He giggles and smiles the whole time and it just makes me so happy. After awhile there was another baby waiting to get on the swing so we decided to try the slide. Check out this picture, is it not the cutest thing you’ve ever seen?!

Finally, we ended up in a ginormous sandbox, which Emmett loved. We didn’t stay long because we had forgotten sunblock and didn’t want Emmett’s skin to be damaged, but he thoroughly enjoyed himself. He even whined a little bit when we forced him to go, he’s turning into such a little boy, no longer our tiny baby, in fact he turned 13 months on Friday. (OMG!)

weekend-3

Sunday was another early wake-up for Emmett, 5 am again. I normally don’t mind getting up that early but I was really feeling sluggish Sunday morning. Didn’t matter though, we sat down to some breakfast, ate, then I showered and we headed out to the grocery store. I really like taking Emmett to the store, it gets him out of the house and able to experience something new and different each week. Since it wasn’t even 9 am yet, it was pretty quiet at Wegmans and our trip went quickly.

weekend-5

We unloaded and put away the groceries and then it was time to head to Grammy and Grandpy’s house! We were heading down there to celebrate a belated birthday with my dad (it was back on 8/13/13). Nothing special, just some playing, a light lunch and cuddles with Grandpa. We did have some cake but Emmett wasn’t interested, he was having more fun playing with all the new and different toys that live at Grammy’s house.

weekend-4

We headed back to Buffalo around 3:30 and were home in time for dinner as a family. We were all feeling lazy, after a busy weekend so we decided on some pizza… I think that Emmett thoroughly enjoyed himself!

weekend-8 weekend-7

Shortly after that, came bath time and bed. Emmett was going between super cuddly to meltdown mode, when that happens we know it’s nearing bedtime.

We had such an amazing weekend, I didn’t want it to end!

What I Ate Wednesday – # 5

It’s that time of the week again, that time for What I Ate Wednesday.

It wasn’t an exciting day for eats but still yummy nonetheless. Let’s get started right off with breakfast, I had two slices of Wegmans 100% Whole Wheat bread, with eggs that were supposed to be overhard but both yolks burst as I was flipping them (boo!). On the bread was some Trader Joe’s Goat Cheese, avocado and some absolutely delicious locally grown, never been refridgerated, tomato. Yes, I’m being very descriptive because I love tomatoes, but more specifically those that are grown and picked in WNY that have never once seen the inside of a fridge.

Let’s take a step back for a second, when I was a little girl my grandma did canning, she’d make homemade BBQ sauce, tomato sauce and tomato juice. I loved being a part of it, we’d do all of the work in her basement and crank the tomatoes through the grinder by hand. She was always so cautious, worried that one of us might lose a finger in the grinder so we (mostly my sister and I) did the cranking and she’d push the tomatoes in. We’d also then help her scrape the screen where the skins and seeds got caught, some of that would be saved and used in some of her recipes. As I retell this story, I am putting myself right back in her basement, smelling the already ground tomatoes boiling down on the stove for one of the three recipes. But my favorite thing of all would be when she’d let us grab one of the tomatoes straight from the bushel and eat it like an apple, no washing or slicing. The taste was out of this world, I can still feel it hitting my taste buds today.

When I went to the Farmer’s market this past weekend and realized that it was fresh tomato season, I did a little cheer to myself. I bought a bunch of the larger ones for salads and just for eating (like an apple) but then also bought some cherry tomatoes. When I first threw one of those in my mouth, it took me right back to my grandma’s basement. Mmmmm

Alright time for some pics, here’s my breakfast.

As you can see I also had two yellow plums and that one has a bite out of it. Well, the external flash on our camera needs new batteries and we don’t currently have any in the house so when I need to use the flash, it takes forever to warm up and I was very hungry this morning. I couldn’t wait! 😀

I completely forgot to get a photo of my lunch. I had a luncheon at work, I had 2 slices of vegetable pizza, a bowl of salad and one too many brownies.

Dinner was one of my favorites! Pulled pork with a slice of American cheese with horseradish on a Marco Polo roll, so delicious. We do it pretty easily in the crock-pot, just throw half a pork shoulder in with some salt, pepper and BBQ seasoning for about 8 hours. Then, about a half hour before you want to eat, pour a bottle of your favorite BBQ sauce in and let it cook on high for about 30 minutes. Finally… enjoy!

what-i-ate-wednesday-56

We also had some roasted broccoli, where, yes, I put a slice of American cheese on it. I couldn’t resist, I haven’t done it in ages and thought, what the hell!?

what-i-ate-wednesday-57what-i-ate-wednesday-58

I also had some Polar Triple Berry Seltzer Water. I’ve been really into the setlzer lately, but my favorite flavor has to be the vanilla. It tastes almost like an Italian soda. Yummy!

And finally, I work from home on Wednesdays. I’m pretty fortunate in that Emmett does a great job of entertaining himself and leaving me to get work done. However, today, he wanted to be as near as possible while I was working.

He laid like that for quite some time, while I was just typing away. Such a sweetie!
