Why Should I Follow Baby Led Weaning?

Are you thinking of doing following the Baby Led Weaning (BLW) eating method? You might be a little worried or concerned about how everything works – Well, worry no more, I’m sharing all sorts of information in regards to why we did BLW with Emmett.

Why You Should Follow Baby Led Weaning - Baby Doodah

This is the very FIRST time we gave Emmett solid foods.

First, you may be wondering why we chose the BLW method in the first place, right? Or maybe you’re wondering how I came across this method?

Well, similar to how you’re getting this information right now, I got it from one of my favorite blogs, The Art of Making a Baby. She used this method with her daughter and was seeing such success that I decided to read up on it. You can read my review of the Baby Led Weaning book here.

I was hooked right from the start. One of the big things the method touts is that since your child is in charge of feeding themselves, they’re never forced to eat anything they don’t like nor will they eat too much. As I’ve mentioned on the blog before, I struggle with Binge Eating Disorder and emotional eating. I do not want Emmett to ever have to suffer through this, and wanted to take every precaution and in ensuring his eating health. Number one was to breastfeed him from birth, and now number two was to follow Baby Led Weaning.

Another big important thing to note about BLW is that they recommend you start with veggies (not fruit or cereal), broccoli in particular. It allows your child’s pallet to develop to the less sweet foods (including fruit), that they then typically end up wanting more of. We did eventually get to bananas, apples and strawberries, but Emmett’s first foods was steamed broccoli, followed by steamed baby carrots and roasted sweet potatoes.

An Effective Way to Feed Your Child

I truly believe that BLW is one of the most effective ways to feed a child who is 6 months or older. They learn how to feed themselves right off the bat, rather than being spoon-fed (though, Emmett did use a spoon, but on his own). In the beginning, since babies love to put everything in their mouths, you just place the foods on the high chair tray in front of the baby, they naturally want to pick it up and mouth it. Since this is all about exploration, if you are feeding your 6 month old breastmilk or formula, them filling their belly with veggies is completely unnecessary.

A couple of other things of note, it is super easy to prep food for your baby when following BLW. Baby eats what you eat! This can lead to a more experimental child when it comes to food choices, even as they grow. Children learn to feed themselves earlier, so they learn to stop eating when their bellies are full.

You will still have a thriving, healthy baby if you don’t follow BLW – but by following it, you will find it MUCH easier to get your baby, turned toddler, turned 4 or 5 year old, to try new things. Emmett (now almost 2 1/2), may not eat or like everything we put in front of him, but 9 times out of 10, he will at least try it – and many times he’s learned that he likes it (cherry tomatoes is an example of this, for us).

When I first came across BLW I was very skeptical. I always thought, how is a baby not going to choke(more to come on this aspect in a future post)!? I couldn’t have been further from the truth. Right off the bat, Emmett was successful with it. We started with broccoli and he ate it immediately, picking it up and putting it into his mouth. He gummed it a bit and probably got a few leaflets down, but he didn’t have even the slightest problem with the taste (and NO gagging!).

A Couple Additional Things to Remember

  • You should not begin using the BLW method until your baby is 6 months of age or older. The child’s stomach is just not ready for ANY food prior to that. It can cause stomach distress or an onset of allergies.
  • On that note, remember your baby makes the decision on when he/she is ready to eat. You can offer them food, but if they’re not interested, that’s okay, because….
  • Until a baby is 9 months old, they don’t REALLY need solids. They should be getting most of their calories from breastmilk or formula. Naturally, by around 9 months, your little one will start to notice how the solid foods taste yummy and help keep their bellies full longer.
  • You should always serve your child food in a high chair. You want them sitting upright and contained.
  • Gagging is NOT choking, but a productive means that the baby uses to keep himself from choking (there’s a whole section in the book dedicated to this).
  • Even though there will likely be gagging, there will probably be less than if the baby is spoon-fed, bc the child is in control of how much and the speed at which they eat.
  • Most foods are not off limits. Since you don’t start BLW until the baby is at least 6 months, your child’s stomach is developed enough to handle any food. (You should avoid milk and PB if you have a family history of allergies).
  • There’s no need to prepare for BLW. As long as you have a high chair, you’re ready. Make your 6 month old child some extra soft broccoli or maybe even sweet potatoes, place them in their high chair at the table with you and watch the magic happen. 🙂

Final Thoughts

If you’re thinking of following this method, I highly recommend you read the book Baby Led Weaning by Gill Rapley and Tracey Murkett, it will answer any possible questions you may have about the process. I know there are tons and tons of forums and blog posts (like this one) that are helpful, but I think it is very important to read the book, as there are loads of tips, that are not included here.

I personally read through the book twice, and then certain sections, 3 or 4 more times. I highlighted, tagged and wrote on many of the pages. I wanted to be well prepared and well-versed before we began the process (I read the book when he was 5’ish months old). And, I’ll be honest, the first few times Emmett gagged were kind of scary, but we were right there, watching his every move and, just like the book says, he gagged twice and the too large food was back in the front of him mouth.

It is important to mention that gagging is NOT choking! Gagging is a defense mechanism and the baby’s gag reflex starts at about the center of their tongues, WAY before it reaches their throat, so babies are very good at protecting themselves.

Trust me, I completely understand the nervousness that surrounds feeding your child this way – you’re worried that they’re going to get enough nourishment or maybe that they’ll choke. Just remember, your child will not start devouring food at 6 months they don’t need to, it is more for exploration, and getting familiar with feeding themselves. Around 9 months is when your child will begin actually eating with the intent to fill their bellies.

Even, despite all my worries, I don’t regret feeding Emmett BLW style, and I honestly think it was one of the BEST decisions I ever made as a first time mommy. Now, he’s an adventurous eater and will try most things we put in front of him.

Your turn!

Emmett’s Baby Led Weaning

Around four months of age the topic of solids was broached at Emmett’s doctor’s appointment but we let his pediatrician know that we had no plans of introducing solids until he was 6 months old. We wanted his stomach to be as developed and ready for solid foods as possible. Plus I knew that he could sleep through the night without a “midnight snack” so solids seemed unnecessary for that reason. I will admit that he didn’t always sleep through the night but I knew that he was physically able to.

I have previously mentioned and did a book review of, Baby Led Weaning, you can see my review here. When I came across this method of introducing solids, it seemed like the best decision for us but I still had to convince Seamus that it was the right thing to do for our baby. I’ll be honest, I was concerned it would be tough to convince him but with my solid level of knowledge and armed with answers to all of his questions, it was pretty easy to sway him.

There’s nothing magical that happens on the exact date that a baby turns 6 months but we wanted to wait until that specific date. Well, unfortunately it had to be postponed for a couple extra nights because our power went out on his 6 month birthday and then again the next day. I was disappointed but also it just prolonged the excitement of giving my baby his first solids.

6-months-7

The book talks about what foods are best to start with and the one they recommend most frequently is broccoli, so we went with that. I was really curious on how Emmett would react to his first taste of food, he’s been breastfed since birth so he’s not used to the exact same flavored drink like formula fed babies are, so I wasn’t nervous but I couldn’t wait to see his facial expressions.

Seamus cut the head of broccoli into long stalks and we roasted it plain for about 10 minutes. Once it cooled, we placed a couple stalks in front of him; he almost instantly picked one up and put it to his mouth. He sucked on the florets and his face was instantly covered in the little buds, it was adorable but there wasn’t a single funny expression. He didn’t cringe or look grossed out, he just ate. I was shocked! I truly expected him to have even a slightly negative reaction but there was none. At that moment, I knew I had chosen the correct path for Emmett.

We continued to have success with each of the new foods we introduced to him. He didn’t turn anything away until we gave him plain chicken breast. I’m not sure whether it was bland or he just didn’t like it but he just would have nothing to do with it that night. The next time we gave him chicken we seasoned it and he was fine with it. Who knows, maybe he just wasn’t in the mood for chicken; I know I’m not always in the mood for chicken.  🙂

There were a couple of times where I almost called it quits with BLW because the gagging and choking was making me nervous. Seamus, being a wonderful and supportive husband, encouraged me to skim the book again to look for any tips on how to handle gagging and whether it was normal. Being the nervous first time mom I was, I had read AND HIGHLIGHTED the section all about how gagging was normal, but had forgotten I’d done this. After rereading and see that it was completely normal and even expected, I was right back on the BLW bandwagon. That has pretty much been my only time faltering.

We did hit a few roadblocks with Emmett eating this way while at day care, but we overcame them with the help of our center’s director. This was the first time they had ever heard of a baby being fed this way and because they needed to remain compliant with many different standards they were leery of how things would go. Seamus and I met with the director to explain the process and the reasoning behind Emmett eating this way and after a couple of weeks things were up and running smoothly. They ensured us that someone would sit and watch Emmett while he. As he’s become more and more proficient with food, they’ve begun feeding him while watching other babies at the same time. Not all day care centers may be willing to work with you if you choose this method, but I encourage you to at least check with them and fully educate them before completely writing the idea off. I promise you, that feeding a baby this way is as easy as feeding them pureed food with a spoon and sometimes even easier.

This method may not be right for everyone but it has been nothing but successful for us. Emmett eats pretty much everything and we rarely have to make a separate meal for him, so it saves time in meal prep. Plus, Seamus and I are able to eat our food when it’s hot since Emmett is feeding himself and we don’t need to take extra time to feed him separately. The benefits of a baby eating this way are pretty much endless and I absolutely would recommend this to any parent who will be introducing solids to their baby soon.

To date, Emmett has tried and enjoyed (in no particular order), broccoli, sweet potatoes, corn bread, bananas, rolled oats (prepared), plums, red potatoes, chicken, mini-meatloaf, mini-quesadillas, mini-hamburgers, sweet peppers, apples, avocado, spaghetti, yogurt, mum mums, pierogi, pickles, ham, sausage, eggs, bread, cheese, pizza crust (with a tiny amount of sauce and cheese left on it), asparagus, tomato, peaches, strawberries, carrots, cucumbers, pears, cabbage, corned beef, pork tenderloin, grilled cheese sandwiches and applesauce (which he surprising did not like at all). There very well may be more but this is all that I can recall at this moment.

Dear Emmett,

We started the month with your 6 month visit to the doctors, I was super excited to see how much you had grown since our last visit. When the doctor placed you on the scale you jumped all the way up to 19.1 lbs, my big boy!! They also measured your length and you were 27.5 inches, you’re getting so long but since neither your dad nor I are short people, that’s no surprise. Your doctor even told us that you are the size of an average NINE month old at 6 months. Holy smokes, we’re in for it!

You also have had your first solids. We didn’t take the normal path that most people take, your dad and I decided to follow Baby Led Weaning for introducing you to solid foods and so far it has worked very well. There has not been one food you’ve turned away! When you try something new you make a really funny face but you stick with it and spend some time gumming whatever it is. The very first food you had was roasted broccoli and you really seemed to enjoy it. So far, you’ve had broccoli, sweet potatoes, baby yogurt, mum mum crackers, plums, apples, bananas, avocado, green peppers, strawberries, brown rice, bread, cheese, meatloaf, chicken and pork. Look at all those foods you’ve tried and LIKED and we’re only 4 weeks in. Can you imagine what’s left?!

Emmett's Very First Food

We are still working on getting you to sit up like a big boy. You do a pretty good job when we put the boppy around you and then place a toy in front of you but then there are times when you just don’t want to sit at all and won’t bend at the waist. We keep trying but as long as you keep developing in other ways, I’m not too concerned.

Your favorite mode of transportation remains rolling around the floor. You’ve definitely started bouncing yourself up onto your knees when you’re on your belly and occasionally you’ll propel yourself forward a bit but for the most part, if you see a toy you want, you roll on over. It’s absolutely hilarious to watch!

Dear-Emmett7

You Fisher Price jump-a-roo continues to be one of your favorite toys. We actually decreased the size of the book that we place underneath you. Previously the book we were using was about 4 inches thick, then we decreased to a book that was an inch thick and now that’s not even needed because you can bounce without it. When we put you in that think you go crazy! You get the silliest face on and bounce bounce BOUNCE! You love bouncing so much that whenever we take you out of your jump-a-roo you continue jumping  on whomever is holding you. So cute!

Your personality makes your dad and I so so happy!! You are constantly smiling and now we can even make you giggle and that sound is so beautiful to our ears.

dear-emmett-73

You’ve also started taking longer naps too. Instead of 3 shorter ones, you’ve been doing 2 longer ones, they fall in the morning and then in the early evening.

Remember how I mentioned last month that you had started babbling more and yelling less? Well, the yelling is back! LOL You still babble but if I’m being honest your favorite form of communication is yelling. You yell when you’re happy, when you’re angry or just when you’re bored. My favorite is when you have a toy and you are playing quietly and then all of a sudden you start to yell at the toy, like “Hey! You’re not doing anything! Play with me!” Adorable!

dear-emmett7-2

Two very exciting things happened just before the end of your 6th month…

The first is that you are now sitting independently! I am so proud of you! We’ve been working on it at home and you’ve been working on it at day care but at long last when I picked you up at school on Thursday you were sitting there all on your own playing with toys. I was so excited and I made sure you knew it too. I squealed and told you what a wonderful job you were doing. You still are working on balance because sometimes when you’re not paying attention you’ll fall backward but you are going for longer and longer stretches of time in a seated position. You are becoming mommy’s big boy!

dear-emmett7-1

The second is (drum roll please) you are now creeping along! You love doing the army crawl and you even sometimes go all the way up onto your knees, to reach your toys. You aren’t moving super fast and you tend to move just a little at a time but you ARE moving. I am literally so so SOOO proud of you.

Watching you grow is just such an amazing thing. I knew that I would love you, that was never a question, but I had no idea how MUCH I’d love you. Every single thing you do is interesting to me and I love watching you do it all. You are growing so quickly, I’m loving it but I wish you’d slow down just a bit. I love you being mommy’s baby boy.

I love you!
