Getting Started with No Sugar, No Grains

Preparing to follow the No Sugar, No Grains lifestyle (NSNG) should be fun and exciting! I want to share our process for getting started, in hopes that it will make your transition easier and more effective.

So, you’ve been giving the idea of eating better some real thought. You’ve come across NSNG and it sounds like something you could really excel at and even enjoy! But you’re unsure how to get started because your house is currently full of food filled with sugar and grains. Have no fear! I’m going to provide you some tips on how to get focused on your goals, clear your kitchen and re-stock, without breaking the budget.

Getting Started

It’s important to have a good foundation set-up for yourself before you begin the No Sugar, No Grains lifestyle. If you leave your kitchen full of the tempting food that you’re now going to be avoiding, it will make this lifestyle even tougher.

My advice? Get rid of anything that you can’t eat (except for those items that your children may be eating). Give it away, you don’t need to throw it out. A food kitchen likely won’t take opened food, but a friend might. Ask around, there’s likely someone who will be interested in those cheez-its you’ve been hoarding.

The reason cleaning out the kitchen is so important, is because when you’re hungry and you stroll into the kitchen, you’re likely going to reach for the first thing you see, or something that you can grab quick. When we’re hungry our resolve to eat the right foods weakens, if your kitchen is free of them – then you have no choice but to go for that delicious Honeycrisp apple, instead of the Reese’s Peanut Butter cup.

You may be wondering whether it is worth changing your habits to eat this way, right?!

For me, it has been absolutely worth it! I am losing weight and not starving. I am NOT obsessing over calories, or points – I don’t worry about when my next meal is (because I never feel hungry).

One other reason you might consider making the switch… My body feels AMAZING! My brain is clear, I can think easier and come to solutions faster and my body doesn’t ache like it once did, when it was full of gluten. I’m telling you, it is SO worth it!

I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again… nothing will happen if you don’t make the switch, you’ll likely continue living your life quite happily – but by switching you may find that you feel 10 times better, and that you don’t even miss the sugar or grains.

How We Did It

We certainly don’t know everything, but I wanted to share how we went about adopting this lifestyle, in hopes that you may benefit from our experiences.

Seamus and I had heard of NSNG from a radio show we listened to. At first we were skeptical, we felt like there was no way we would do it. I mean, when you think, no more brownies, or no more crusty bread with your pasta, it can feel a little overwhelming. However, one day after Seamus had a particularly sucky week and couldn’t concentrate, he decided to give NSNG a try.

Sidenote: You will hear a lot about all the problems that gluten can cause in your body. It’s true! That’s part of why your mental clarity returns when you stop eating it.

Within a month of starting, not only was he thinking clearer, Seamus had lost 20 lbs with little effort, other than changing his diet. He’s kept losing, and now my husband, who is 6’5″ weighs 182 lbs (and trust me, he is not starving). This lifestyle really works!

After seeing his success, I was instantly motivated to give it a try. I attempted a start on several different occasions, but always quit by lunch time. Why? I wasn’t prepared, my house was full of the foods that I couldn’t eat, and my willpower to avoid them was weak. But then the new year rolled around and I decided to make a change, and to challenge myself.

On January 1st I made the choice to be dedicated to the NSNG way of life for 31 days. It was enough time to see how I would feel, and short enough where my mind didn’t start to panic about the change. My 31 days are now over, and I have no plans on stopping. I still feel great, and I’m losing weight (I’ve lost 8 lbs in 4 weeks). Why stop!?

What’s unique about NSNG?

We’ve been told for SO long that fat is bad, that it’s the enemy and that we should avoid it. But, my husband is living proof that fat isn’t bad – sugar and grains are.

Implenting NSNG is simple. Just stop eating sugar, substitute sugars and grains and you’re locked and loaded. But, of course it is more complicated than that, you have a brain who is addicted to sugar and believes that without grains (specifically pasta or bread) you’ll never make it. I’m here to tell you, you don’t need bread – with the amount of healthy fats that you’re allowed to eat, you won’t miss it.

Still Struggling to Get Started? Here are Some Easy Actionable Steps for You to Follow

  • Clear the cupboards. Go through your cupboards and get rid of everything that contains a sugar or a grain. No, you don’t need to throw it away – donate it or give it to a family / friend who has not adopted the NSNG lifestyle.
  • Meal plan. Before you go shopping to restock those now empty cupboards, spend time making a meal plan (you can see my tips on making one by clicking on the link).
  • Eat breakfast / lunch, before shopping. Make a shopping list and eat breakfast / lunch before heading out the door, you never want to shop on an empty stomach.
  • Stick to the list. Seriously! At least for the first few weeks, buy exactly what you wrote down. Your resolve may not be strong enough to say no to the junk, otherwise.
  • Food prep is key. Spend some time prepping what you can, cutting veggies, washing fruit – making certain meals ahead of time.
  • Eat the fat. Eat lots of yummy fat and protein and don’t let yourself get too hungry so you begin craving foods you shouldn’t eat. The one thing this does not mean is, eating fast food. You want fats that do not include grains or sugars!
  • Allow for imperfection. This one is HUGE! Don’t beat yourself up if you have a cookie at the company pot luck, or if you need to grab something on the run and you have a bun from a burger. This is life, it is going to happen – what is important is that you cut grains and sugars out of your life for the majority of the time.

How Do I Know this Will Work?

As I mentioned earlier, Seamus has lost 65 lbs simply by following the NSNG lifestyle. I can’t even attribute much of it to exercise, because he injured his back and hasn’t been able to run since August. He’s just followed NSNG, walked and has lost the weight.

If you’re interested in learning more about NSNG, or are maybe want to start following this lifestyle, Vinnie Tortorich has a book, Fitness Confidential and a self-titled podcast. There’s a wealth of information, all stuff I’ve personally benefited from!

I plan on sharing more about NSNG around these parts, possibly even recipes so be on the lookout for those!

Old School Blogging – Valentine’s Day Edition

We’re throwin’ it waaaay back! We’re doing some Old School Valentine’s Blogging today, folks.

valentine's old school blogging

In celebration of the beautiful, love-filled day that is Valentine’s Day, I decided to connect with Miss Elaine-ous Life and  her Valentine’s blogging prompts.

First question on our Valentine’s journey back in time is…

How do you typically celebrate Valentine’s Day?
We keep it simple. When I was in high school I always thought I wanted something grand and majestic, but the few years I had that with my ex, it just didn’t feel right. Now with Seamus, we’ve always done dinner or lunch out and sometimes we exchange gifts. This year, we’ll be going out for lunch and then just spending the time together as a family. Nothing over the top or extravagant, just the way we like it.

Do you like to get A)chocolates B) flowers  C) a sweet card or D) ALL OF THE ABOVE?
Flowers and a sweet card work for me, but I don’t even need those. Extra kisses, hugs and love are good enough of a gift for me.

Would you consider yourself a “cuddler”?  If not, would you at least cuddle on Valentine’s Day?
Yes, yes YES – I am a cuddler through and though. I love laying in the crook of Seamus’ arm and I love when Emmett curls up on the couch to watch TV, or to read one of his books. Cuddling is an activity for the whole year through!

What is your favorite movie about love or with a love story?
Okay, so I’m going to get really cheesy on yah… The Notebook, 100%. I know that’s probably one of the most cheesy love movies of all time but I just love it.

Do you believe in “love at first sight”?  Did it happen to you?
I do believe in it, and I guess it kind of happened to me. I met Seamus online, at Match.com. I’ve told the story on my blog before, but I’ll tell it again. I had joined Match for 1 month, and told myself that if I hadn’t met someone after a month that I was okay being single for awhile longer. My subscription expired. The next day I received a notification that I had an email from a Seamus (which I thought was pronounced Sea-mis, but is actually pronounced Shay-mus). I logged into the site but in order to view the email, I had to rejoin for another month, something told me to go ahead and do it. I jumped, joined and fell pretty instantly “in-love” with him. We emailed back and forth a couple times, and chatted via phone so that when we finally met I felt that I knew him pretty well. The rest, as they say, is history! 😀

Do you believe love can conquer all things?
I believe that it can truly help you cope with so much in life. A very difficult time can be made easier by having someone, whom you deeply care about, to lean on.

Love this face!

Love this face!

What is one of the main things you love about your S.O.(significant other)?
Oh goodness, just one?! His intelligence. I swear that he knows something about everything. I could mention something that I’ve just learned about and Seamus will be able to tell me some deeper details about it. It amazes me frequently!

If you could have the perfect Valentine date what would you and your loved one do?
A night in Stowe, VT, at Stone Hill Inn, where we honeymooned. It was one of the most romantic and stress-free weeks of my life and I would go back there, even for just a night, in a heartbeat.

A pic of us on our honeymoon.

A pic of us on our honeymoon.

Tell me about your first crush!
Yikes! My first crush? This is so embarrassing. My first crush, that I can think of was for Buffalo of the children’s music group Buffalo and Brandy. If you don’t know who they are, I’ll help you out. Click on this link to go to their page. They came to my school, or a local school in the area and I was instantly smitten. LOL We got posters of them and I hung one on the door of my bedroom, every morning I’d get up and kiss my fingers and then put them up to Buffalo’s face. (Sidenote: I’m sitting here writing this and cracking myself up. Kids are so crazy!) There were others after that one, but I’m pretty sure he was my very first.

Do you have any embarrassing or horror dating stories?
Not entirely terrible. I mean the guy was nice and he did treat me to a meal, but it was kind of a disaster from the moment I met him. We didn’t hit it off and the whole meal was awkward because I wasn’t sure what to talk about. We ended the night with a hug, and didn’t really speak again. Oh well.

Favorite flower?
Calla Lilies. White ones are my favorite, but burnt orange ones are a close second.

happy-anniversary-6

What’s the first type of chocolate you hope for when you reach into a box of chocolates?
Chocolate stuffed with peanut butter. Mmmmm

Favorite love song?
Our wedding song, by far. I Will Follow You Into the Dark by Death Cab for Cutie.

What is the best breakup song?
I Can’t Make You Love Me – Bonnie Raitt

Favorite celebrity couple?
Hmmm…I’m not really into big celebrities, but I would probably have to say Ellen and Portia, or Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner. They seem like two really strong couples.

Overall, are you pro- or anti- Valentine’s Day?
Pro! I don’t care what anyone says, I love me some love and Valentine’s Day is a great day to show some extra love. I do agree that we should show the ones we care about love all the time, but it never hurts to put it out there more heavily once a year. Plus, Emmett’s hugs and kisses are pretty darn wonderful!

If someone did that “Say Anything” boombox thing outside your window, would you be into it, or call the police?
I’ve never seen the movie, but I just watched the clip. I would be totally into it. Why not? Anyone doing something to express their love for you, in any way, is a good thing in my book.

First thing you notice about the objects of your affection?
This is so strange, but teeth. I can’t explain it, but I always notice a person’s teeth before anything else. Second, would be whether they had any sense of humor. I could never have dated a fuddy duddy – I need someone who can laugh at pretty much everything, just like I do.

What’s the best thing you’ve ever gotten for Valentine’s Day?
I don’t even know. I’ve gotten some lovely flowers over the years, some delicious strawberries from Sharri’s Berries, and an adorable Vermont Teddy Bear that was a pregnant mommy bear (similar), when I was newly pregnant. Overall though, while I do like gifts, what’s more important is that we are kind and loving to each other, and we pretty much have this one in the bag, so I win!

Your turn!

I want to hear from you – Are you pro or anti Valentine’s day?
Do you do anything special on V-day?

Our Trip to the Zoo

I’m finally sharing our pics from our trip to the Buffalo zoo!

**Fair Warning – This is a picture heavy post.**

Before our vacation had rolled around (in October) we knew we wanted to take Emmett to the zoo. It is so much easier to go during the day on a weekday than on a weekend, fewer crowds means we have the opportunity to spend more time looking at the animals without being pushed away. We wanted to give that experience to Emmett, so off we went on a chilly Thursday afternoon.

zoo-12It was such an awesome day! Emmett was in a great mood and the sun was shining, we had absolutely nothing but a beautiful, perfect day in front of us.

When you first come through the gate at the Buffalo Zoo, to your right are the elephants so we head right over there. Unfortunately we couldn’t see any, they weren’t outside and they weren’t up front in their building. They did have a note saying that occasionally they had to be pulled for training, so that’s likely where they were. Either way, Emmett was in great spirits, we tried to get him to pose with the poster. 🙂

zoo-15It didn’t go so well. lol He just kept looking through it or grabbing at the edges, but it did make a cute photo.

Our next stop was over to the giraffes! We were hoping one of them would be outside, but no such luck. They were available inside, though. We came right in as they were enjoying their breakfast.

zoo-14While we were standing there a couple of the giraffes (there were a total of 5) came over to us and poked their heads and neck as far as it could through the fence. Probably wanted to give us a good smell. Emmett enjoyed watching them just move about their holders.

We made our way slowly around the zoo, stopping to look at any animal that might be out, Emmett seemed to be in awe of them all. I think my favorite picture we got of him was when we were looking at the monkeys in the rain forest exhibit, we told him what they were and he got VERY excited (he loves monkeys)!

zoo-10Isn’t that an awesome picture!? It’s one of my all-time favorites of Baby Doodah.

zoo-9We visited with the lions, too. We were able to get SO close, they were sitting right on a window ledge, even I was pretty wow’d by that.

zoo-8 zoo-7

We spent some time indoors looking at the different reptiles and we stopped to have a snack since they had benches. Emmett liked it because he was allowed to get out of his stroller and stretch his legs a bit.

zoo-18 zoo-5Next was over to see the gorillas, where there was a mommy and baby (toddler) gorilla hanging out. It was really sweet to see the momma and baby so attached to each other.

zoo-6Emmett was pretty impressed too!

Towards the end we walked by the Baboons. They were all clustered on one large rock, picking the bugs off of one another. We stood there for awhile, just watching them, one little guy came over, very close to the fence to get a good look at us too.

zoo-20 zoo-19Seamus got some really great pictures of Emmett and I. Sadly, I’m not in a lot of photos with Emmett, but Seamus got some good ones this time around.

zoo-1 zoo-3 zoo-2And of course, I have to share the next ones because Emmett is just so gosh darn cute!

zoo-16 zoo

We really had a fantastic time. I’d love to go back during the summer so that we could see more animals that were likely all cozied up in their homes for the cooler weather that has slowly moved in.

Your turn!

Have you taken your kids to the zoo?

What were your favorite exhibits?
